Banks prefer to repossess homes with equity, they can sell them for a profit. In 2008, my home dropped from $1.5M to $1.1M, but because I had my equity separate, I stayed in control.
While banks borrowed at 1% and earned 4% (a 400% return), I leveraged my real estate at a net cost of 2.5% and earned 10%, making 400% more.
