Thank you for posting this, it’s been really helpful.
Going through a glitch-filled process of producing an Emma email for my employer, I learned a few things that I wish I had known up front. This information only came to me after hours of work and five conversations with a sales rep. (The degree to which the sales reps can help you is a definite plus with Emma.) I stuck with them because I wanted customization but didn’t feel like brushing up on my basic HTML knowledge.
The most simple template friendly to clean design is the first one, the “Blank.” Users looking for a real blank will be put off by some hokey graphics, including a crown, but there is a somewhat hidden workaround to reaching a real blank. First, select any template. Then select “change template” and choose the Blank. On the next screen you’ll see an option to choose the hokey template. Ignore that, and look just below. You’ll see a choice of four alternate versions. Clicking on the second or third option leads to a far less fugly template.
I don’t know what level of service you receive after you sign up for an account, but beforehand you have some leverage. Sales reps can have some of the immobile, centered text and image frames flush right or left, or have them deleted. (Why Emma insists on always including a few immobile components is a mystery; a cynic would say they’re there to encourage the purchase of a custom template. These really aren’t very expensive, but I wanted to see how far I could get without one.)
Too many times the emails I saw on my control panel did not match the emails that went out. On any device. Fonts and colors changed for no reason. I was able to do a fair job using their templates, and learned something about advantageous layouts along the way, but ultimately I chose to create a nearly complete layout in InDesign. Where before I had been struggling to insert five images with captions, I now had one jpg. (I note that many users, among them those with the most attractive emails, go this route. To some degree, Emma’s reputation for superior design is maintained by creative users working around the company’s templates!)
If you go this route, I recommend using a 14 or 15 point font for your body text and creating a jpg that is at least 7.5 inches wide, if you’re creating a vertically scrolling email. This approach requires you do more of your own work in considering how the email may appear on various devices, but this is not very difficult and gives you more graphic control. You do lose the ability to link to individual images or text, but you can add elements above or below. I did type in a separate headline and used the separate logo box. (Because the text in a jpg is not as sharp as the HTML text you can produce in Emma, I was careful to use grays rather than black for HTML fonts, so it would be less sharp and therefore blend better with the text in my jpg.) In order to achieve a flush left, I used Photoshop to add five extra inches at the right edge of the jpg canvas, in the color of my Emma background. Knowing your RGB values is of course essential for that.
I used also used my status as a prospective account holder to get a few minor custom adjustments, such as repositioning or deleting template elements.
